Movement of Cannabis and Associated Products Remains Prohibited on BNSF

Jan 22, 2019

With the recent enactment of the Cannabis Act in Canada, transportation of marijuana is now permitted within Canada. Effective February 2, 2019, a new STCC code will govern the shipment of cannabis and associated products (including edibles) between Canadian provinces and territories.

In accordance with U.S. federal law, BNSF does not permit the movement of cannabis on our network. We have recently added provisions to both the Intermodal Rules & Policies Guide and BNSF Rules Book 6100-Series (must be logged into Customer Portal to view)clarifying that cannabis and associated products (including edibles) are prohibited items and are not accepted by BNSF, either directly or in interchange, for rail transportation. Shippers are responsible for all associated costs and expenses, including fines or penalties, resulting from the tendering of prohibited shipments.

If you have any questions, please contact your BNSF marketing representative.
